How do you clean/replace the connector/switch at the bottom of the ignition actuator rod in an '01 caravan?

I've changed the ignition switch up near the steering wheel, but when the key is turned to start, nothing happens, no sound. When the key is in the "off" position, or removed, all accessories (radio etc) stay on.
